Your first 24 hours in Tonga

An arrival checklist for airport pickup, check-in, money, phones and your first evening.

Make your first day about arriving comfortably: have your entry documents ready, arrange your pickup and know how you will get into your accommodation. This checklist works around your actual flight, rather than assuming a daytime arrival.

What should I arrange before flying?

  1. Check your documents. Confirm the requirements for your passport, travel purpose and transit countries before departure. Keep your booking confirmations and accommodation contact available offline. Read our entry guidance before paying for arrangements.
  2. Book the first night and pickup together. Send the flight number, arrival date in Tonga, airport, passenger count and luggage details. Request the meeting point, driver contact, total fare and delay policy in writing.
  3. Agree on check-in. For a late arrival, ask how to collect the key and whether food and drinking water can be arranged. An early arrival may need a separate early check-in arrangement.
  4. Plan your money and phone connection. Ask your accommodation about payment methods. Check roaming or SIM options before leaving, and save important contacts offline.

What do I do when I land?

Follow airport signs and staff directions for arrival formalities and baggage collection. Complete declarations accurately and ask an officer if you are unsure about an item. Keep the onward itinerary and accommodation details ready if requested.

After completing the arrival process, go to your agreed meeting point. Confirm the driver and destination against your booking. If the driver is missing, contact the transfer provider using the saved number before making another arrangement. See the airport checklist and transfer guide.

Can I rely on buying a SIM or withdrawing cash on arrival?

Airport counter hours, stock, ATM operation and connectivity have not been confirmed for every arrival. Make a backup plan before travelling: ask your bank about card use, your phone provider about roaming, and your host how to pay if a card or cash machine is unavailable. See money and connectivity.

What if I arrive on a Sunday?

Confirm your pickup, check-in and meals specifically for that Sunday. Ask where and when you can obtain anything you need; do not build the first day around an unconfirmed shop, restaurant or tour. Our Sunday planning guide helps you organise these details.

Keep the first evening simple

Settle in, check the next day's pickup and ask your host about local conditions and the property's emergency arrangements. Leave a demanding excursion for another day. If you plan to continue to another island, confirm the connection and transfer separately; do not assume the arrival flight connects with a same-day departure.
